Camellias
Japonica and Sasanqua are two commonly cultivated species of Camellia. Here are major differences:
Japonica (tsubaki) | Sasanqua (sazanka) | |
Bloom size | 2″ to 3″ | 3″ to 4″ |
Bloom season (zone 9) | January to February | October to December |
When a flower fades, | it falls as a whole | it drops petal by petal |
Camellias can grow as tall as 25′, but they are extremely slow growers. The Lee’s have a dozen variety and most are 10 years or older, but they are only 3′ to 4′ tall.
