Camellias

Japonica and Sasanqua are two commonly cultivated species of Camellia. Here are major differences:

Japonica (tsubaki) Sasanqua (sazanka)
Bloom size 2″ to 3″ 3″ to 4″
Bloom season (zone 9) January to February October to December
When a flower fades, it falls as a whole it drops petal by petal

Camellias can grow as tall as 25′, but they are extremely slow growers.  The Lee’s have a dozen variety and most are 10 years or older, but they are only 3′ to 4′ tall.
